In the late ‘s reformed smuggler Freddie Musgrave has worked hard to turn a legitimate trade, but then a face from his past turns up threatening to ruin things for him. This is definitely for adults, because there is a violent and traumatic rape but I didn’t even realize it was a rape until there were hints and I had to go back and re-read it; the scene itself isn’t graphic central to the plot.

I have watched the mini-series a few times before reading the book itself, but I would say, both are are worthy one’s attention. Isabelle is about as evil as a villain can be. There are two men in Cissie’s life over the years, the quiet and gentle miller Matthew, and the volatile Lordship’s son Clive.

Catherine Cookson was certainly a prolific writer of historical ficton set in England during the ‘s. In the end, the author writes that Cissie always belonged to Clive.

I thought it was well written tale of a woman by the end of the novel is much older unlike in the movie of strength and impeccable character who overcomes ALL obstacles.

Clive is furious with his father and is determined that Cissie should have her son back. Lots of likable characters; even the characters we were supposed to hate were likable in a way BUT the series are different than the book, one Well, this is one of the most wonderful books I have ever read. Keep track of everything you watch; tell your friends. Why does she have Cissie develop romantic feelings for a man that violates her in front of her younger sibling? I recommend it to those who LOVE historical fiction and perhaps those who like not having the difficulty of someth Catherine Cookson has recently become one of my favorite authors.

Why did the author turn a loving, caring and self sacrificing Matthew into a possessive control freak after the wedding? I will say it had my undivided attention so for engrossing reading I have to give it 4 stars. Great story, and amazing female MC!

I’m a little mixed in my opinion of it.
