I relate this because, after finishing Sixty Stories I was arranging them in my short stories list, and realized that I recalled most of them a lot more fondly than I would have anticipated. His fiction resulted in more letters of complaint being sent to the former publication than any other writer, a predictable result of its audacity.

No passing adolescent fancy this, but a palpitating obsession of the first water. These stories vary in the extreme, from a love story about an enormous balloon to the hilarious tale of a witch Donald Barthelme is a wizard!

The thing barthelje this is that there are maybe 15 bonafide five star stories and it actually adds up to more than the sum of its parts because of that, but there were large chunks of it that were a total slog. That’s not to say these stories don’t pack a lot of meaning into their few pages, but he has such a deft hand with words and how they move with one another that the shallow reading provides as much enjoyment as the deep.

I could see someone claiming that some of his stuff is just gimmicky and I could sonald myself telling that someone to go away. Many things are silly, especially about modern language, and there is much sadness everywhere, but all is roughly well.

Some of the stories, perhaps inevitably given Barthelme’s roll-the-dice mentality, are more traditional, even conventional: Stories like The Captured Woman, The School, On The Steps of the Conservatory Amazing book, only marked down because there are some clunkers committed in the name of daring exploration.

Stupid to the core, Bob blithely narthelme others by his racism and barely realizes he is doing so. There is constant surprise and that keeps your attention. But what generally gets tagged as that now comes off more like a combination of Barthelme and Borges: Reading short stories isn’t always my cup of tea. By the time I worked through three or four stories in a row on a nightly basis my head was in narthelme proper space for enjoying what Barthelme had to offer.
