I did give myself the time to savor it I can’t exactly say why or demonstrate it, it seems. Beckett has written about identity before but in this book, he seemed to me to be taking Descartes’ idea “I think therefore I am” to its extremity.
Thanks for telling us about the problem. The term that occurred to me to best describe The Unnamable was surreal: Luciano Berio ‘s musical work Sinfonia uses sections of The Unnamablealong with the music of Gustav Mahler and quotes from many other famous compositions for its third movement.
A novel without a plot yet still beautiful and still a must-read for all lovers of postmodern literature. There I was, happily standing on one leg. And yet one can never tell. The Unnamable takes credit for the creation of earlier beckettian characters that he invented to put off speaking of himself and finds it inevitable that the time to speak of himself has come.
The final book in Beckett’s trilogy is the most difficult to read. Can one be viewed?
