This was a plus, because there’s nothing I hate more in crime fiction than solving the mystery before the detective has come even close to working it out. I wasn’t anticipating from the title that this would be one of her detective novels, since I’ve been working my way through her historical romances and the title sounded more like one of those.
This is true of Uncle Joe’s wife Maud in this one and unusual for Heyer’s older female characters. While some critics thought her novels were too detailed, others considered the level of detail to be Heyer’s greatest asset. The first half is mostly setting the scene with introductions and glimpses into characters’ personalities and hints to possible murder motivations as they arrive to the house party. Multiple people need to seem to be capable of murder or at least have some sort of motivation envoius get rid of the victim. This is the first book I’ve read by Heyer with a woman of character. As usual with Heyer’s stories, her cast of characters fulfill every “ic” I can think of: There are some nice moments of humour, some of which also provide neat clues.
The jocular old uncle staying with his casda brot A Holiday Whodunnit with a behind locked door country house party setting was a delicious prospect. Heyer was an intensely private person who remained a best selling author all her life without the aid of publicity. She made no appearances, never gave an interview and only answered fan letters herself if they made an interesting historical point.
It was a low-key murder and mayhem piece that I found engaging. The owner of the substantial estate, that old Scrooge Nathaniel Herriard, is found stabbed in the back, and the six holiday guests find themselves the suspects of a murder enquiry.
This classic mystery might have you thinking twice about congregating your family under one enviouz for a little holiday gathering. And hopefully the reader won’t be disappointed when they find out who the guilty party is and they’re carted off to jail.
Then there is Nat’s business partner who irritates him with the latest business proposal.
