Ryle’s main concern was for the decline in practical holiness in his day. The very air would seem an air he could not breathe. Carried away by a fancied liberality and charity, they seem to think everybody is right holoness nobody is wrong, every clergyman is sound and none are unsound, everybody is going to be saved and nobody going to be lost. Ryle challenges this idea. If a preacher of religion is only clever and eloquent and earnest, they appear to think he is all right, however strange and heterogeneous his sermons may be. If we don’t feel love for Christ, it is because we feel no sense of obligation to Him, something we should seek to remedy without delay. There was not one chapter in holijess I did not underline, mark, star, and highlight special statements and truths.
Almost every chapter was convicting, bringing the reader back to the Gospel and makes you question yourself to see if you have truly repented and put your trust in Christ and thus have salvation, because if you have you will desire holiness and strive towards holiness.
